RESUME – Colin Bohler is considered
one of the top Bull Terrier and Terrier Judges

Colin Bohler is considered one of the top Bull Terrier and Terrier judges, exhibitors and breeders in the “Bull Terrier” world today.

As the owner of Kingstonia Bull Terrier, the kennel has produced a number of champions over the years of top international standard.

Currently Ch Kingstonia Here Comes Trouble of Beltone (Jane), Ch Sandawana Tommy Hotspur of Kingstonia (Thomas), and their daughter Ch Kingstonia Ahead of Trouble (Portia), (winner of the prestigous Goldfields Kennel Club All Breeds Championship Show at the tender age of 9 months), are part Kingstonia Kennels and the Bohler family.

Colin became involved with Bull Terriers in 1976 when he purchased his first pet Bull Terrier, a white bitch named, Jestar of Kingstonia, fondly known to the family as “Jessica”. His first judging appointment came in 1980 when he was invited to judge the Terrier group at the Transvaal Kennel Club open show.

Committees, etc.

Colin has served on the committee of the Eastern Transvaal Bull Terrier Club as well as the Bull Terrier Care Association (welfare) as chairman for a number of years. He has also served on the editorial committee of the South African Bull Terrier Annual from 1984 to 1998.

The patron of six specialist Bull Terrier clubs in South Africa Colin is considered without doubt to be an active Bull Terrier specialist.

Judging

Colin is also actively involved in presenting training seminars for aspirant Bull Terrier judges under the auspices of the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA).

Over the past 20 years Colin has judged the Terrier groups as well as numerous Bull Terrier specialty shows (see list below). Not only has he been active locally in South Africa but also in Australia, England, Sweden and Zimbabwe. He has visited leading kennels and attending numerous major dog shows throughout the world. One of the highlights was judging the SA Bull Terrier Club’s last Major Trophy Show of the millennium during October 1999.

Breeding

Kingstonia Bull Terriers Kennels have produced some of the top Bull Terriers in South Africa. One of the most significant decisions was when the bitch, Ch Riolema Rubigale of Beltone, mated with (Int) Ch Polytellis Silver Convention and (Int) Ch Explorer of Prince Advokat in Holland and Germany respectively. These matings provided a solid foundation that significantly advanced the breed in South Africa.

Colin also started a successful programme of importing frozen semen for artificial insemination.

Kingstonia imported top bloodlines from Europe that dramatically improved the breed in South Africa, especially the head quality and overall conformation of the dogs. From that time on Colin has owned and bred 27 breed champions, 7 Major Trophy winners and numerous competitors. Kingstonia has bred and owned 3 Brood bitches, 6 Stud dogs of the year, as well as many Best in Show winners (All Breeds Championship shows). This was achieved by only breeding 17 litters over a period of 23 years.

Colin contributes the success to only breeding from selective top quality stock with the emphasis on temperament and overall soundness.

Ch Boneparte of the French Border

One of the most notable and pre-potent dogs that Colin imported from Germany was, Ch Boneparte of the French Border at Kingstonia (James). This dog, possessing one of the most outstanding heads for his time, produced no less than South African champions – an all time breed record for this country and he was subsequently crowned as Stud dog of the year for two consecutive years (1992 and 1993). James’ progeny has won almost all titles on the South African dog scene, amongst others 23 Major Trophy Show titles since 1991, including 2 Supreme Bull Terriers of South Africa and numerous Best in Show titles (All Breeds). In his own right, James has won 54 Best of Breeds (SA record), 12 Terrier Groups, 6 Best in Show titles and Dog of the Year in 1991.

Book

Colin has published his first book on Bull Terriers titled, “Bull Terriers of South Africa 1860-1999”. This is a quarto-monograph on the breed in South Africa – a first of its kind that will hopefully add value to any dog library. The book was written to cater for the serious Bull Terrier lover, as well as the less adventurous pet owner.
